Cock Ring Sizes: How to Measure, How Tight to Go, and Which O-Ring Fits a Harness

The short answer

Ring sizes are inside diameters, so wrap a string around where the ring will sit, soft, and divide by 3.14. Start with a stretchy silicone ring, keep it on for 30 minutes at most, and take it off if it hurts, goes numb or changes color.

A cock ring size is the inside diameter, the distance straight across the hole. Most makers print it, a few give only the outside size of the whole ring, and the ones that explain what to do with the number don't agree. We read the sizing and safety pages of 11 ring makers, the FDA's guidance for constriction rings and what medical groups advise, all on November 1, 2026. This is how to measure, what the number means for each kind of ring, and how to tell when one is too tight.

The second half covers the other ring in the bedroom, the O-ring in a strap-on harness. It's sized the same way, across the inside, but the toy decides what you need, and some makers list the ring for each of their dildos. Our picks are on the cock ring ranking and the strap-on ranking.

How to Measure for a Cock Ring

Measure where the ring will sit, and measure soft. A ring that only goes around the shaft needs the distance around the base of the shaft. A ring worn behind the testicles, which is how most standard and metal rings go on, needs the distance around the base of the penis and the scrotum together. That second number is much bigger, so decide which kind of ring you want before you measure.

1. Warm and soft. Ballistic Metal, which makes steel rings, says to measure when you're warm and flaccid, with the testicles hanging loosely. Himeros, which makes tungsten rings, asks for the same.

2. Wrap a string where the ring will sit. A piece of string, a strip of paper or a soft tape measure all work. Keep it snug against the skin without squeezing the skin into folds. Lovehoney's size guide says you should just about fit one finger between the string and you.

3. Mark it and measure. Mark where the end meets the string, lay it flat and measure up to the mark. That's the circumference.

4. Divide by 3.14. The result is the inside diameter, the number most rings are sold by. Ballistic Metal's guide gives the example of 6.28 inches around, which works out to a 2-inch ring. The chart below does the division for you.

Ballistic Metal also suggests checking the string once you're hard, when it should feel comfortably tight with no room for a finger. And it asks you to measure twice, because it takes no returns or exchanges on its rings.

Cock Ring Size Chart

The chart turns a measurement into a ring size. It's the circumference divided by π, so it works for any ring sold by inside diameter, cock ring or harness ring. It doesn't tell you how much squeeze you'll feel. That depends on the kind of ring, which is the next section.

9 in (229 mm)2.86 in (73 mm)
9.5 in (241 mm)3.02 in (77 mm)

The ring size is the circumference divided by π (3.1416), rounded to two decimals and to the nearest millimeter. It's the ring that matches your measurement with no squeeze at all.

For a sense of where you'll land, the average soft penis is about 3.7 inches around (9.31 cm) in a 2015 review of studies covering more than 15,000 men in BJU International, so a ring that sits on the shaft lands near the top of the chart. Himeros's chart for rings worn behind the scrotum runs from 187 to 240 millimeters around, 7.4 to 9.4 inches, near the bottom.

Stretchy, Adjustable or Metal

Stretchy silicone. On a stretchy ring the size is a tightness setting more than a fit. Tantus says on its ring pages that the diameter has nothing to do with the size of the man wearing it, and that a smaller ring is harder to get on and more intense once it's on. Screaming O tells you to pick a ring a little smaller than your own diameter, since it feels tighter as you get hard, and to start larger and more flexible while you're new. Tantus lists its Soft Cock Ring at 1.5 inches unstretched and 4.75 stretched, which is why that one goes on soft or hard. If you can't decide, a set settles it for little money. Lovehoney's Get Hard Extra Thick set comes with three rings, 1.2, 1.45 and 1.6 inches across.

Adjustable. Rings that close with snaps or a buckle are often sold by the circumference they close to, not by diameter. Stockroom's leather cock ring closes to a maximum of 7.5 inches around and snaps off for a quick release, and its KinkLab rubber ring adjusts from 6 to 7.5 inches. Measure, then pick one whose range puts your number in the middle.

Metal. Steel, aluminum and tungsten don't give at all, so the size has to be right. Lovehoney doesn't recommend metal rings for beginners, because they can't be pulled or cut off fast, and the International Society for Sexual Medicine says metal rings should be avoided. If you buy one anyway, know that the makers turn the same measurement into very different sizes.

HimerosIts own chart, where 196 to 205 mm around is a 4848 mm (1.9 in)

From each maker's sizing guide, read November 1, 2026. Ballistic Metal and Himeros measure around the base of the penis behind the scrotum, soft. Lovehoney measures where the ring will rest.

Between two sizes, Ballistic Metal leaves the choice to you and Himeros says to take the smaller. The FDA's guidance for constriction rings asks for the least constrictive ring that keeps an erection, so we'd take the larger one, and follow the chart of the maker you're buying from, since its rings are made to it.

How Tight Should a Cock Ring Be?

Snug, never painful. Lovehoney's ring guide describes a good fit as snug and "even a little cozy", and says any real pain means the ring is too small or too tight. A ring that's doing its job makes the penis look a little fuller, with the veins standing out and a reddish flush, which Lovehoney's medically reviewed guide calls normal.

WebMD's test is the simplest we found. A ring that fits stays put when you're soft and still comes off easily when you're hard.

Take it off now if
It hurts. It goes numb. The penis feels cold. The skin turns deep red, purple or blue. The ring leaves a dent or a visible narrowing, or anything swells. These signs come from We-Vibe's manual, Lovehoney's guides and the ISSM.

What 11 Makers Tell You

Few makers give a size you can use, and fewer give the rules for wearing a ring. This is what each one says on its own product pages, manuals and FAQs.

Read on each maker's US site, manuals and FAQ pages on November 1, 2026, and on Fun Factory's German store, because its US store was locked. None found means no rule on any page or manual we could read. Tenga's and Hot Octopuss's manuals are images we couldn't read.

Two of them sell rings for "extended wear". b-Vibe's product pages call its Flex Ring "ideal for extended wear" and suggest the Snug & Tug for extended wear too, while the Snug & Tug's own manual says 30 minutes at most. Lovense's Diamo page promises "Comfortable, extended wear" and gives no time limit. The FDA's guidance for rings sold to help with an erection says they should avoid design features that encourage wear beyond 30 minutes. Novelty rings don't fall under it, but the tissue they squeeze is the same.

How Long, and the Other Rules

The makers and medical sources that give rules give the same ones, and none of these comes from a single source.

Thirty minutes at most. The FDA's guidance, the ISSM, WebMD, We-Vibe, b-Vibe and Lovehoney all say it, and so does the British Association of Urological Surgeons in its leaflet on vacuum pumps, which are used with a ring. Fun Factory says about 20 minutes, Screaming O 20 to 30, and WebMD suggests just five minutes the first few times.

An hour off before the next one. The FDA, We-Vibe, b-Vibe, Lovehoney, WebMD and Medical News Today all say to wait about an hour before you put a ring back on. We found no source that says a few minutes is enough.

Never asleep. Take the ring off before you sleep. The FDA's warning is that a ring left on in your sleep can do permanent damage.

Not drunk or high, say the FDA and We-Vibe.

Not if you can't feel or grip well. The FDA and We-Vibe say not to use a ring if you have less feeling in the penis, and the FDA, We-Vibe and b-Vibe say the same about weak hands, which can make a ring hard to get off.

Ask a doctor first if you have a clotting disorder, circulation problems, diabetes or a nerve disease, says We-Vibe's manual. Fun Factory says not to wear a ring at all with known clotting or circulation disorders. And if erections are a regular problem, see a doctor before you buy a ring.

If it won't come off, use plenty of lube and try once more. If it still won't move, or anything is swelling, go to an emergency room right away. That's the ISSM's and Lovehoney's advice, and the doctors who write up these cases say embarrassment is often why people wait too long. A silicone ring can be cut off with scissors, which Tantus gives as one reason it makes its rings in silicone.

Harness O-Ring Sizes

A harness ring holds a dildo by its base. The toy goes through the ring and the base stays behind it, so the base has to be wider than the ring. That's why Sportsheets, Tantus and Stockroom all describe their rings as made for toys with a Flared baseA base wider than the shaft, so the toy can't slip all the way in. Anything you use anally needs one. More in the glossary.

Measure the toy, not yourself. You need the width of the widest part that has to go through the ring, usually the head or the thickest point of the shaft, and the width of the base. Use calipers or a ruler held square across it, or a string and the same divide-by-3.14 as above. Measure the toy you own, too. Vixen says its handmade toys can differ from the listing by up to an eighth of an inch, and Tantus allows up to 10%.

The balls go through. On a realistic toy the balls usually pass through the ring with the shaft, and the flat base behind them does the holding. That's why Lovehoney lists a 1.75-inch ring for its Lifelike Lover Luxe, whose shaft is only about 1.3 inches across, and Mr Hankey's a 2.5-inch ring for a Small Perfect Penis, about 1.6 inches across. Vixen's Goodfella is built the same way, with balls made to hang in front of the harness.

Rubber and elastic give, metal doesn't. A stretchy ring can hold a toy a little wider than its opening. Tantus sells its 1.5-inch-wide Silk Large in a kit with a 1.45-inch ring, Aslan says the 2.5-inch opening of the ring in its Large Toy Commando takes toys up to 3 inches, and the elastic ring sewn into Spareparts' Joque and Tomboi takes toys from 1.25 to 2.25 inches. A metal ring has to be at least as wide as everything that goes through it.

For a big or grippy toy, Spareparts suggests a bag trick. Slide a plastic bag three quarters of the way down the toy, push the ring down past the end of the bag, then pull the bag out. It recommends it for toys 2 inches wide or more, and its ring tops out at 2.25.

A loose toy wobbles. A ring much wider than the toy lets it tip or slip through. Spareparts sells foam rings that slide onto the toy and widen its base behind the harness ring, for toys with a small or flimsy base.

Most harnesses come with rings from 1.25 to 2 inches, and big toys need 2.5 or 3. The strap-on ranking lists the rings that come with each harness. Vixen's care page adds two habits worth keeping, use the right ring for the toy and don't leave a toy sitting in a harness after use.

Keep harness rings for toys. Tantus prints "Do not use O-Rings on penis, this is for toy use only" on its harness ring sets, while Sportsheets sells its rubber rings with the line "Doubles as a cock ring". We side with Tantus. The FDA's guidance asks for constriction rings in soft, pliable material with a way to release them fast, and a ring made for a penis is built that way. A metal harness ring is the last thing you want stuck.

The Ring Each Toy Needs

Some makers list the ring for each dildo, which saves the measuring. These are the toys on our rankings that have one.

How We Did This

We read the ring and harness pages of the makers on our cock ring and strap-on rankings, the two metal ring makers we found that publish a sizing method (Ballistic Metal and Himeros), the FDA's rule and guidance for constriction rings, the ISSM, the British Association of Urological Surgeons, WebMD, Medical News Today and two medical case reports, all on November 1, 2026. Mr Hankey's site sits behind a bot check, so its ring sizes come from our own reads of its pages for our product reviews, the Perfect Penis on October 15 and the Atlas on November 1.

Every size in the chart is the circumference divided by π and rounded. We aren't doctors. If a ring hurts, take it off, and if it won't come off, get help.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size cock ring do I need?

Measure around where the ring will sit, soft, and divide by 3.14 for the inside diameter. With a stretchy silicone ring that number only sets the tightness, so start at or a little under your own diameter and go smaller only if you want more squeeze. Metal has to match, so follow that maker's own chart, and take the larger size if you're between two.

How tight should a cock ring be?

Snug but never painful. A ring that's working makes the penis look a little fuller and redder, with the veins showing. Pain, numbness, a cold feeling, a deep red, purple or blue color, or a dent where the ring sits means it's too tight, so take it off.

How do you measure for a cock ring?

Warm and soft, wrap a string around the spot where the ring will sit, snug without folding the skin. For a ring behind the testicles that's around the base of the penis and the scrotum together. Mark the overlap, measure the length and divide by 3.14, or look it up in the size chart.

Are cock ring sizes the inside or outside diameter?

Inside. Lovehoney, Ballistic Metal, Himeros, Vixen and Tantus all size their rings by the inside diameter. Fun Factory, Tenga and Hot Octopuss give only the outside size of the whole ring on their product pages, which doesn't tell you the fit.

How long can you wear a cock ring?

Thirty minutes at most, then an hour off before the next time. That's the FDA's guidance for rings sold to help with an erection, and the ISSM, WebMD, We-Vibe, b-Vibe and Lovehoney say the same. Never fall asleep in one.

How do you put on a cock ring?

Soft or half-hard, with a little water-based lube inside the ring. For a ring that goes behind the testicles, ease one testicle through at a time and then the penis, which is how Tantus, We-Vibe and Hot Octopuss describe it. Don't force an erect penis through a ring. The one exception we found is b-Vibe's Snug & Tug, which goes on once you're fully erect.

Does a smaller cock ring make you last longer?

A tighter ring holds in more blood, which is why it feels more intense. Tantus says a ring that holds the testicles down slows ejaculation, and claims the squeeze "takes orgasm from about 6 seconds to up to 45 seconds", but it gives no source, and we found no study that measures it. Tighter isn't safer, and the FDA's advice is the least constrictive ring that keeps an erection.

What size O-ring do I need for a strap-on?

Measure the toy. The shaft, and the balls if it has them, go through the ring and the base mustn't. Most harnesses come with rings from 1.25 to 2 inches, Spareparts' elastic ring takes toys from 1.25 to 2.25, and big toys like an LG/XL Perfect Penis need 3 inches. Rubber and elastic rings take a toy a little wider than their opening, and metal ones don't.

Can I use a harness O-ring as a cock ring?

We wouldn't. Tantus says its harness rings are for toys only, even though Sportsheets sells its rubber ones as doubling as a cock ring. A ring made for a penis is softer and comes off faster, and a metal harness ring is the worst kind to get stuck.

What should I do if a cock ring gets stuck?

Use plenty of lube and try once more. If it still won't come off, or anything is swelling, go to an emergency room right away. Hospitals have tools to cut rings off, and leaving a stuck ring on is the danger, not the embarrassment of asking for help.
