Body-Safe Silicone

Body-safe silicone is pure silicone with no fillers, plasticizers or phthalates. It's nonporous, so bacteria can't settle into the surface, and you can clean it completely. A toy without a motor can be boiled or run through the top rack of a dishwasher if its maker allows it. Platinum-cured (addition-cure) silicone is the claim to look for. You'll also see "medical-grade" on listings. Medical-grade silicone has passed biocompatibility tests for medical devices (ISO 10993 or USP Class VI) for cytotoxicity, sensitization and irritation. On a toy listing that's still a claim unless the maker shows the test documents, and it says nothing about how the silicone was cured, because medical silicone is made with platinum or peroxide curing. So "medical-grade" and "platinum-cured" aren't the same thing, and the difference matters most if you have sensitivities or allergies. Budget "silicone" toys from unknown brands may contain fillers. If one smells strongly of chemicals out of the box, it's probably not pure silicone.
